How to sell a Tesla
Four routes exist, and they suit different people. Here is the whole process, including the parts that are specific to selling an electric car.

The short answer
You can sell a Tesla privately, part-exchange it, use an online marketplace, or sell to a specialist buyer. Whichever route you take you will need the V5C, photo ID, bank details and — if there is finance — a settlement figure from your lender. The Tesla-specific step most sellers miss is removing the car from their Tesla account after handover.
- Get a settlement figure first if there is any finance running
- Handle a private plate transfer before the car changes hands, not after
- Remove the vehicle from your Tesla account once the sale completes
The four routes, compared honestly
Including where we are not the best answer.
| Route | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Private sale | Getting the highest headline price | Time, viewings, payment risk, and you handle finance settlement yourself. |
| Part-exchange | Convenience when buying another car | Usually the weakest figure, often obscured inside the new car deal. |
| Online marketplace | Comparing several offers quickly | Offers can be revised after inspection; you may deal with whoever bids. |
| Specialist buyer | Speed, certainty and Tesla-specific valuation | You are dealing with one buyer, so compare the figure against the others. |
The process, step by step
Six steps in the order they actually happen.
- 01Establish your finance positionIf there is an agreement running, request a settlement figure from your lender before anything else. It governs the timing of everything that follows.
- 02Gather your documentsV5C in your name, photo ID, service history, both key cards and the charging equipment included in the sale.
- 03Sort a private plateIf you are keeping a personalised registration, start the transfer before agreeing a sale. It cannot be done afterwards.
- 04Get valuationsGet more than one. A specialist figure and a marketplace figure tell you different things.
- 05Agree and arrange collectionConfirm what is included — cables, covers, spare key cards — so nothing is disputed on the day.
- 06Complete the paperworkNotify DVLA of the change of keeper, and keep your confirmation.
The Tesla-specific steps
The parts that do not apply to selling any other car.
Remove the car from your Tesla account. This is the step most sellers forget. Until it is done, the vehicle may still appear in your app and your account remains associated with it. Do it once the sale has completed and the car has gone.
Remove phone keys and paired devices. Any phone previously set up as a key should be unpaired, along with any saved home or work addresses and connected accounts.
Factory reset the car. This clears saved addresses, contacts, media accounts and driver profiles. Do it after you have removed anything you need and before handover.
Hand over all key cards. Most cars came with two. If one is lost, say so in advance rather than at collection.
What goes wrong most often
Five avoidable problems we see repeatedly.
| Mistake | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Not declaring kerbed wheels | The figure changes at collection, which feels like a bait and switch even when it is not. |
| Leaving the private plate on | The sale stalls while the transfer is arranged. |
| No settlement figure | Nothing can complete until the lender confirms the position. |
| Forgetting the second key card | A replaceable cost, but an avoidable deduction. |
| Not removing the car from the app | Loose ends after the money has already been paid. |
