Does FSD add value at resale?

The most common question we are asked, and the one with the least satisfying answer: it depends entirely on whether the package stays with the car.

The short answer

Software options only affect resale value if they transfer to the next owner. Where a package is tied to the vehicle it is a genuine value factor. Where it is tied to the original owner’s account, it adds nothing to what a buyer will pay, however much it cost.

  • Transferability is the whole question — not the original purchase price
  • Owners consistently overestimate how much software adds at resale
  • We check the position on your specific car rather than assuming either way
01  Principle

Why transferability decides everything

A buyer pays for what they receive, not for what you spent.

If a software package remains attached to the vehicle when it changes hands, the next owner receives something of value and will pay something for it. If it does not, they receive nothing, and no amount of original expenditure changes that.

This is the part that stings. An owner who paid a substantial sum for a package often expects to recover a meaningful share of it. Where the package does not transfer, the honest answer is that it is not recoverable at resale — it was a cost of ownership, like insurance.

Tesla’s position on which packages transfer has changed more than once, and has differed between markets and time periods. That is exactly why we ask about your specific car and check the position, rather than applying a blanket rule.

02  Packages

The packages we ask about

Four things worth declaring, whichever way the answer falls.

  • 01
Full Self-Driving capabilityThe largest single software cost most owners will have paid. Whether it transfers is the first thing we establish.
  • 02
Enhanced AutopilotWhere fitted, the same question applies.
  • 03
Acceleration BoostA permanent unlock on the vehicle where applied. Worth declaring.
  • 04
Premium ConnectivityA subscription rather than an option in most cases, so it generally does not carry value at resale.
  • 05
Later paid upgradesAnything purchased after delivery. Tell us and we will check the position.
  • 06
Free SuperchargingNot software, but the same logic: it matters if and only if it transfers with the car.
03  Value

What it is realistically worth

Being straight about the scale, because this is where sellers are most often disappointed.

ScenarioEffect on your valuation
Package transfers with the carA genuine positive, and we will say so.
Package tied to the previous owner’s accountNo effect, because the buyer receives nothing.
Unclear or undocumentedWe check. Do not assume it counts against you.
Hardware generationSometimes relevant to desirability independently of any package.
04  Advice

What to do before you sell

Three steps, all free.

Check what is actually on the car. Look at the vehicle’s software and upgrades list rather than relying on memory of what was ordered years ago.

Find the purchase evidence. An order confirmation or invoice showing what was bought and when helps establish the position.

Declare it either way. If it turns out not to transfer, you have lost nothing by telling us. If it does, you would have lost money by not mentioning it.
