Mileage and Tesla value

Mileage matters, but not as bluntly as a trade guide applies it. On an EV the story it tells is different to the one it tells on a petrol car.

The short answer

Mileage is read against age, use and battery position rather than as a flat deduction per mile. A high-mileage Tesla with a strong warranty position and clean history often values better than a low-mileage car in poor condition or with an unclear past.

  • Age and mileage together tell the story; either alone misleads
  • EVs have fewer wear items than combustion cars, so mileage carries less mechanical risk
  • Very low mileage is not automatically a positive — cars dislike standing
01  Difference

Why mileage reads differently on an EV

The mechanical assumptions behind mileage-based pricing were built for combustion engines.

On a petrol or diesel car, mileage is a proxy for engine, gearbox, clutch and exhaust wear — a long list of expensive components with finite lives. Price per mile is a reasonable shorthand for accumulated mechanical risk.

An electric car does not have most of those components. There is no clutch, no gearbox in the conventional sense, no exhaust, no cambelt. What accumulates instead is battery cycling, tyre and brake wear, suspension wear and interior wear — and of those, only battery cycling is genuinely hard to inspect.

So a trade guide applying a combustion-shaped mileage curve to a Tesla is answering a question the car does not ask. That gap is one of the clearest places where a specialist valuation and a generic one diverge.

02  Reading

How we read mileage

Four things considered together rather than one number in isolation.

  • 01
Miles against ageAverage annual mileage in the UK sits around ten thousand. A car meaningfully above or below that prompts a different conversation, not an automatic adjustment.
  • 02
Type of useMotorway miles are gentler on a car than the same distance in stop-start urban driving. Suspension and tyre condition usually tell us which it was.
  • 03
Battery positionHigh mileage inside a strong warranty position is a very different proposition to the same mileage outside it.
  • 04
Condition alignmentMileage and condition should agree. A high-mileage car in excellent order suggests care; a low-mileage car in poor order raises questions worth asking.
  • 05
Service recordMore material at higher mileage, because there is more history to have.
  • 06
MOT readingsThe MOT record gives an independent series of odometer readings, which is a useful cross-check for everyone.
03  Low

When low mileage is not the advantage it seems

Standing does its own damage, and buyers know it.

A car that has covered very few miles over several years has usually spent long periods stationary. That can mean flat-spotted tyres, seized brake components, perished rubber and a battery that has sat at a high state of charge for extended periods.

None of this makes a low-mileage car undesirable — it usually still values strongly. But the idea that fewer miles is automatically better is not how a specialist reads it. A genuinely well-used and well-maintained car can present better than a neglected garage queen.

04  Selling

What this means if you are selling

Three practical conclusions.

SituationWhat we would say
High mileage, good condition, in warrantyA straightforward car to value. Do not assume the mileage rules you out.
High mileage, out of warrantyStill very saleable. History and evidence carry more weight here than anywhere else.
Low mileage, stood for long periodsMention it. Tyre age and brake condition will be checked, and declaring it prevents surprises.
Mileage about to cross a round numberNot worth engineering. We do not price in round-number steps.
